What counts as a good CTR?
YouTube's own guidance: half of all channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%. Where a video lands depends on where it is shown, so the best yardstick is your own channel's usual CTR:
- New and small channels often see higher CTR at first, because impressions go mostly to people who already know them.
- CTR usually falls as a video spreads to the home page and to viewers who don't know the channel. A dropping CTR with rising impressions is normal.
- An impression is counted only when a thumbnail is at least half visible for a second or more, so scrolling past quickly doesn't count.
How to raise it
- Check your thumbnail at feed size with the feed preview, next to the videos you compete with.
- Fix contrast, clutter and boldness with the thumbnail checker.
- Test two versions and use the checker above to see whether the difference is real before you decide.
FAQ
How is CTR calculated?
Views from impressions ÷ impressions × 100. YouTube Studio shows the same figure as "Impressions click-through rate".
How many impressions do I need for a fair test?
It depends on how big the difference is. Small differences (say 4.5% vs 5.0%) need tens of thousands of impressions per version; big ones show up sooner. The checker tells you when the numbers are still too close to call.
Is a high CTR always good?
Only if people keep watching. A thumbnail that promises something the video doesn't deliver earns clicks and then loses viewers, which hurts the video. Look at average view duration together with CTR.
